The Last Ever Locomotive on the Line

 

After the two little Highland Railway tank engines were withdrawn – one (No. 55051) when a driving axle sheared through and she lost a driving wheel in 1956 and the other. ( No. 55053 ). simply because there were no longer any spare parts in store, in 1958, respectively. A new British Railways Standard Class 2 MT (Mixed Traffic ) 2-6-0 tender locomotive. No. 78052 was imported for a short while, until a pair of Western Region 0-6-0 pannier tanks. Nos. 1646 and 1649 from Swindon were brought-up to Scotland from South Wales, to run the line until it was closed to passenger traffic on 13th June 1960. The track was lifted during the Spring and Summer of 1962 by Messrs. James N. Connel & Co. of Coatbridge whose rail tractor, the Ruston & Hornsby Ltd., of Lincoln, diesel engine presided over the disposal of the line. She is seen on the very last section of the Dornoch Light Railway to remain, at the back of the Skelbo Halt goods yard, where she lay for a few months until removed by road early in August 1962. The photographer’s two children, Lorna and Gail Robertson are seen playing in the abandoned yard.
